The Story Behind Write On

Hello and welcome to Write On! My name is Amy and I believe that the process of writing  and sharing your story is a powerful tool for transformation, self discovery and unblocking creatively.

I believe that everyone has a story to tell. The role we identify with often becomes our identity and personal narrative. I believe that the stories we tell ourselves about who we are shape our lives. We define ourselves by our jobs, our status, our relationships and by other people’s opinions.  Sometimes we hold onto a story from our past which no longer serves us but we don’t know how to let go.  We are multifaceted and constantly changing  but yet we can let one moment define us for a lifetime leaving us stuck, lost or afraid. If the story we tell ourselves does not serve or support our authentic selves then we must have the courage to rewrite  or change the story in order to heal.

I have always used journalling as a form of therapy. The pages of my diary held my fears and secrets when I felt unsupported and unwanted. I was a secret writer in that I was not confident enough to share anything I wrote for many years due to feelings of low self esteem, anxiety and depression caused by bullying and abuse. I wanted to share my story but thought that nobody would care. I went from being a confident child to being afraid of being in the world. I wanted to disappear and could no longer see my worth.

I would attend writing classes but the focus was always on fiction and the technicalities of writing. I was always looking for the psychology behind the creative process and how to write non-fiction in my own voice. I needed a safe space to express myself so I looked to people that I admired – singers, actors, artists, writers and imagined them to be my mentors through the work they created. I started researching how creative people find their voices, how to get past creative fears or blocks and how they deal with issues of resistance, procrastination and do the work whether they feel inspired or not.

Toni Morrisson said, “If there’s a book that you want to read but it hasn’t been written yet, then you must write it.”

I figured out how to express myself again through using various creative techniques which I developed and wanted to help other people find themselves. I  wanted to be the person I did not have growing up.

With my background in education and documentary making, I created Write On! as a safe space for adults and teenagers to express themselves without fear of judgment or criticism. It’s a place that you can explore who you are and creatively play without fear of getting it wrong.

Since Write On! began in 2012, I have been invited to give talks and facilitate workshops at conferences and festivals across South Africa.  I have created a variety of tailor made creative workshops and courses at high schools, NGOs, corporations and for individuals around change fatigue, wellness, personal growth and authentic story telling.

We all have a story to tell and that story matters. If you can speak, then you can write. If you think you can’t write, that’s just your inner critic trying to keep you safe and small.

This is an invitation to tell your stories. This is a call to write down what you’ve kept hidden for fear of not being good enough. In a world that is constantly documenting every moment through social media, don’t only share the superficial day to day of what you have eaten or where you’ve been.

If we don’t share who we are with the people that matter most to us, our stories end up dying with us. By being vulnerable and authentic and sharing your truth, you create a space for others to do the same. Your bravery creates a ripple effect. Thank you for reading this.
