SHE: A Writing Challenge (And competition) for South African Men

everything

June is going to be a busy month for Write On! – Not only will we be starting another course but we have some very exciting news! For the first time, we will be hosting a writing challenge and competition exclusively for men.

This year is the 60th anniversary of the August 9 1956 Women’s March at the Union Buildings in Pretoria in protest against the extension of passes to women by the Apartheid regime. Many women-focused cultural and political events are being planned to mark this contribution of women to the South Africa struggle for liberation.

But what about the men and their stories? Men are just as important when it comes to telling the story of the women of South Africa who have influenced and changed their lives.

Write On! together with Beulah Thumbadoo is calling upon the men of South Africa to send in essays about their thoughts and feelings about the women in their lives as part of a writing challenge and competition.

But what should men write about? That’s where we come in.
Write On! will be hosting a series of workshops around helping you find your voice as a writer, getting over writers block and connecting with the stories from your life about the women who raised you, loved you, broke your heart, saved you, enraged you and stood by you when no one else would.

Spaces will be limited for these workshops in order to give each participant individual attention. Please note that if you have already attended a Write On! course but would like to still enter the competition, you are welcome to do so. If you would like some accountability or just need some feedback, we are also offering one on one coaching/editing sessions to help you with your personal essays about women.

Prize money of R6000 as well as prizes of coaching sessions and workshops will be divided amongst the winners.

Please note that ALL submissions must be in 1st July 2016 so do not wait until the last minute to book your place. Bookings are first come, first served.
